The last light somewhere in the Swedish forest. For hours we’ve been staring at the trees, waiting and hoping. As time goes by the excitement fades into something else. Maybe some would call it mindfulness. Just being there, nothing else to do, nowhere else to be. Just the sounds of the forest, the fading light and your own thoughts. The world slows down. And suddenly - a movement in the shadows. A little moment of magic.

The annual trophy hunt for brown bears in Sweden is on. 649 bears are to be slaughtered, that’s more than 20% of the population. The land owner get to keep the fur, skull and meat. This is nothing but a crazy trophy hunt. The bear is a protected species and do not cause trouble. I feel sad and ashamed to be a Swedish citizen. The destruction of our forests and the efforts to decimate our predators is a disgrace. It’s hard to find hope and now what to do. But I guess to try to tell people what’s going on is one way. There’s not many places on this planet where you can experience complete silence. Svalbard is one of them. A calm day when the sea is like a huge mirror and low clouds are hovering above the mountains the only sound you can hear are your own breaths and sometimes the vague sound of the ice melting. Apart from that - silence.
